CBD Oil Users in Salt Lake City, Utah Catch a Case of the Blues Due to Synthetic Cannabidiol
A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that 52 individuals in Utah became ill after consuming falsely-labeled synthetic cannabidiol (CBD) products.
The CDC reported that various smoke shops within the Salt Lake City area sold these products between October 2018 and January 2019. It is legal to buy CBD oil in Utah as treatment for epilepsy. However, since the state has very limited regulations, a system for ensuring quality control has yet to be developed.
Synthetic CBD Oil Sickens Dozens of People in Utah
While the report is unsettling, it is not surprising. A month ago, we also reported about the case of a Pennsylvania woman suing a well-known brand of CBD. The plaintiff tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol. News organizations throughout the country also uncovered incorrectly-labeled CBD products. Some of these contained pesticides and heavy metals while others did not contain any CBD at all.
In the Utah report, more than half of the cases tested positive for 4-CCB, a synthetic cannabidiol compound. There are also reports of individuals using “Yolo CBD Oil”. Unfortunately, investigators have yet to establish the identity of the manufacturer of the brand.
Real and authentic cannabidiol is a treasure chest of natural healing properties. It is known for managing a myriad of human health conditions like inflammation, chronic pain, epilepsy, and anxiety. On the other hand, synthetic cannabinoids can bring more harm than good. They are very risky because of their many dangerous side effects.
Federal health authorities are urging states to form regulatory policies related to cannabis extracts. This is to “minimize the risk for recurrences of this emerging public health threat.” Currently, the FDA is collaborating with the public in the establishment of a legal framework. This will monitor CBD safety in food, supplements, and other products.
It may be unfortunate, but we need more government interference to limit the sale of questionable and unsafe CBD products. Check back with us to learn more about the latest in CBD regulations.
