Hemp Industry Updates
Does CBD Have a Bright Health and Wellness Future in the United States?
A recent article by USA Today addressed the pervasiveness of CBD in the United States. According to the article, which cited a Gallup Poll on CBD use, about 1 in 7 adults, or 14%, personally use CBD products. The highest percentage among the age groups that use CBD are individuals ages 18 to 29. About 20% of this group uses CBD. As for older individuals, specifically over the age of 65, about 11% reported using CBD.
The increase in CBD use has led the FDA to questions that are still outstanding and ones that the agency is working to address. FDA officials issued a notice about a recent hearing.
Within the notice, they wrote,
“While the use of cannabis and cannabis-derived products, including hemp and hemp-derived products, has increased dramatically in recent years, questions remain regarding the safety considerations raised by the widespread use of these products. These questions could impact the approaches we consider taking in regulating the development and marketing of products.”
So, safe to say, the future of the CBD industry will include answering outstanding questions about the substance, and potential regulation in response to the conclusion that the FDA reaches.
In addition, a recent article appeared on Benzinga that addressed the future of the CBD industry in the United States. It also noted that there are “unclear legalities and inconsistent regulation,” which “will put a ceiling on industry grow that was previously thought to be unlimited.”
