Group Of Senators Urge FDA To Implement CBD Regulations To Stop The Bad Actors
Senators Seek FDA to Implement CBD Regulations
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to issue regulations concerning CBD products. This means that largely, popular CBD products such as gummies, tinctures, edibles, and the like are not provided with any oversight – and this can and does have an impact on consumers.
Even so, politicians are demanding that things change, and that the FDA issue the much-needed safety regulations for CBD products. In a recent press conference, Senator Richard Blumenthal urged the FDA to release CBD regulations and to identify the substance’s status – that is, whether it is a food or a drug. He also requested that testing be conducted to determine the contends of products. Senator Blumenthal’s press conference can be viewed here:
“What we need to do is stop the bad actors, rid the market of unsubstantiated and inaccurate health claims, make sure the good guys have a leveled playing field where truth and accuracy are valued and rewarded by consumers and by the regulatory framework,” he said.
Further adding;
“Hemp growers, manufacturers, food producers and most important, consumers, all deserve a regulatory framework that will set rules for classification, labeling, marketing, quality and other important features so that we stop the Wild West claims and make available products that are truly helpful and beneficial to consumers,” he added. “The treatment of pain, anxiety, inflammation, other kinds of maladies may be aided by CBD and consumers deserve the benefits of those treatments but they also deserve to know the truth about the oils, lotions, gummies and other products that are out there.”
The FDA’s website provides information on FDA regulation in a post titled FDA Regulation of Cannabis-Derived Products, Including Cannabidiol (CBD).
Therein, the FDA recognizes the interest in CBD products, and the opportunities that the substance and its derived compounds may offer. The FDA also indicates therein that it is aware that some companies marketing CBD products or CBD-derived formulas are violating the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics act, and are thus putting consumers at risk. As a result, at least for now, the page provides consumers with several resources that may help consumers make decisions concerning CBD.
