Consumers who use medical cannabis in order to treat their health issues and disease, now have the option to buy in bulk which in turn, cuts down the packaging size in which their medicine comes. Hexo Corp. announced on Wednesday the launch of its 30-gram product made with a strain of the Tsunami dried flower the company uses. Since all products need to comply with the regulations imposed by Health Canada, more weed in one bag means less wasting by less packaging materials. The same amount of cannabis purchased that would have arrived in several smaller packages is now available for purchase in one big pack. In a press release, Hexo said this is an important step for sustainability, which has been a stumbling block in the regulated cannabis market.
Packaging Requirements
The Cannabis Act says the packaging for cannabis products has to be waterproof and child resistant, and opaque so many companies have chosen to move away from using biodegradable material to using plastic. Some cannabis packaging recycling programs, such as TerraCycle, recycle the packaging of licensed producers and the Canopy Growth Corp.’s vape products. At curbside pickups in Ontario, packaging can be recycled too. However, the best way to reduce packaging waste remains buying products in bulk. Here’s what the co-founder and CEO of Hexo, Sebastien St-Louis, had to say about his company’s new packaging:
“We know our medical clients have been waiting for this opportunity to purchase a higher volume of cannabis without excess packaging.”
Excise Tax Absorbed by Hexo
Furthermore, St-Louis says Hexo offers free shipping, not to mention they will cover the expenses of the excise tax for each order. For now, the 30-gram packaging is only for medical users and the packaging they come in, not for non-medical users. The product is an indica-dominant strain from the Northern Light variant, has a flavor of fruit and a 20 to 26% TCH boost. The CBD potency is under 1%. However, more strains in the 30-gram bag are going to soon be made available. The Hexo 28-gram version for recreational consumers was launched last year in October, at $140 for a bag or $5 for a gram. This is $0.60 less than the gram price on the unregulated cannabis markets.
