Annie Martin is facing a felony charges for selling a product that she maintains was hemp, reports the Kansas City Star.
However, the product sold could have been hemp flower, which is similar in appearance and scent to marijuana. The difference is the chemical makeup. Martin shared with the Kansas City Star:
“Nobody was going to get high off of anything from our store. They could have smoked all the hemp flower we had here and never got high.”
The Kansas City Bureau of Investigation raided her shop twice. Although she characterized the first instance as a misunderstanding, police seized cash from the register, iPads related to the business, and inventory.
At this point, Martin, two other owners, and an employee are facing felony charges. According to Martin’s attorney, if she is convicted, she could face up to 206 months in prison.
