New Hemp CBD Extract Policy Announced by United Natural Products Alliance
The United Natural Products Alliance, also known as the UNPA, has announced a new policy concerning hemp extracts. The policy explains that the framework of practices is in the interest of health professionals, consumers, and relevant industries. The new policy is identified in the member policy guidelines, which was effective as of October 1, 2019.
Those who would like to be members of the UNPA must complete several components of the approval process, such as compliance assessment, website review, labeling, and a UNPA staff and Executive Committee review and vetting.
The guidelines also require that companies carry hemp and CBD product liability insurance. Further, the formulas must be hemp derived only. That is, they cannot include the sale of synthetic substances, including those that are derived from chemicals or synthetic biology, cannabinoids, or other constituents of the hemp plant.
Other guidelines indicate that there is an adverse event reporting system, a recall procedure, DHSEA labeling and claims compliance, Federal Trade Commission Compliance, Good Manufacturing Practices Compliance, Food Safety Modernization Act compliance, and more. Kudos to the UNPA for taking the CBD industry a step in the right direction!
