New Cannabis Certificate Course Offered by Illinois Oakton Community College
An Illinois Community College is offering a certificate course on cannabis. The course focuses on molecular biology, drug laws, the treatment of terminal illnesses, and other helpful knowledge to the cannabis industry. The course also offers practical knowledge for securing employment in the industry. The program is a first for the state of Illinois and has approximately 100 students participating in its first semester. It consists of 12 credit hours and has a tuition of $1,635 for Illinois residents.
The industry is looking for employees who know how to work with chronically ill patients. The Cannabis Business Association of Illinois is holding its first job fair on the Oakton campus next month. They are looking to offer internships or workshops in licensed cultivation centers so that students can gain hands-on experience. Southern Illinois University is also considering a certificate program on indoor house plants that would include cannabis. The program would not be able to grow cannabis on campus, but they could use hemp which they are already cultivating.
