cbd risks for pets

CBD has become an extremely popular remedy for issues such as stress, anxiety, and pain relief from chronic health conditions. However, when it comes to animals and the effects of CBD, there is a great deal that is unknown.

A WPTV report discussed the matter and perspective from Dr. Annette Sysel, a veterinarian at Martin Downs Animal Hospital. Dr. Sysel stated in the segment, “I probably have clients asking me about CBD on a weekly basis. I think there are a lot of applications on the human aside and for that reason, a lot of people are interested in it for their pets as well.”

However, as Dr. Sysel confirmed, there has not been much research on the impact of CBD on dogs and how it could treat their ailments. She stated, “So at this time, there’s really not enough there to say is the product safe.”

There are also risks involved when a pet owner administers CBD to their pet. Not only because the effects are not known, but because products may contain other ingredients that could have an adverse effect as well.

The state of Florida, which is where the Martin Downs Animal Hospital is located, does not permit veterinarians to discuss or recommend CBD to clients. Dr. Sysel continued,

“According to the Farm Act, hemp has to be manufactured by licensed distributors which are predominantly located in Colorado, Kentucky and Oregon. However, a lot of people are making CBD products on their own, and it’s a largely unregulated marketplace at this time. They call it right now the Wild West. CBD from Hemp products can be pretty much made by anyone, It can be very dangerous for owners to be giving CBD from uncertain sources when they’re not even sure exactly what is in the product.” She added, “So it is important to talk to veterinarians about other safe known options that are available at this time.”

At the end of the day, the conclusion is that CBD can be very dangerous for pets. There is no telling what the effects could be from the CBD and other ingredients in the formula. Right now, there is still a lot of work and research that needs to be done.
