CBD Companies Warned by the FDA to Stop Making Claims Related to Opioids

Two companies have been sent warning letters by the US Food and Drug Administration, being charged with illegally selling cannabidiol (CBD) products that aren’t approved and in manners that violate the Food and Drug Cosmetic Act. Both these companies have advertised their CBD products to work against serious diseases, even if it’s illegal to make such claims.

Which Are the Warned Companies?

BIOTA Biosciences was sent a warning letter after it has marketed its injectable CBD and curcumin products as fighters against serious diseases and the best alternatives to opioids. The company markets wholesale CBD extracts and private label CBD, selling beverages, water soluble and injectable CBD, bulk CBD extracts and injectable curcumin.

The other company issued a warning letter was Homera Corp DBA Natures CBD Oil Distribution, charged with distributing and marketing CBD products as treatments for serious diseases and opioid addiction. The firm is a Green Roads CBD Products retailer and CBD products’ own label distributor.

CBD Hasn’t Been Proven to Treat Opioid Addiction

In a statement, the FDA’s principal deputy commissioner Amy Abernethy said that:

“CBDE has not been shown to treat opioid addiction. Opioid addiction is a real problem in our country and those who are addicted need to seek out proper treatment from a health care provider. There are many unanswered questions about the science, safety, effectiveness and quality of unapproved products containing CBD, and we will continue to work to protect the health and safety of American consumers from products that are being marketed in violation of the law.”

Except for Epidiolex, the prescription drug for severe and rare forms of epilepsy, CBD products have never been approved by the FDA, so also not evaluated if they really work for what they promise to deliver. They also don’t have a recommended dosage and there’s nothing mentioned on how they interfere with the FDA-approved drugs.

Nothing has been mentioned on their side effects either. The FDA doesn’t review how these products are being manufactured, so it has concerns that Americans believe the CBD they’re taking has been approved by the federal government, which is not at all the case.

Also, the FDA has expressed other concerns over the safety of CBD being used in the short and long run.
