U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel participated in a discussion with Dr. Stephen Hahn, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner nominee, according to a press release on Mitch McConnel’s website.
The discussion centered on several topics, including raising the age to purchase tobacco on the national level to age 21, and the importance of hemp production in Kentucky. Senator McConnel also shared with Dr. Hahn the significance of his “Tobacco-Free Youth Act.” The purpose of the act is to address the vaping epidemic and to ensure that dangerous nicotine products do not reach adolescents.
Concerning hemp legalization in Kentucky, the press release indicates that Senator McConnel shared the positive impact that hemp legalization is having on the state, and its outstanding challenges, as well. These challenges include the need for a regulatory framework concerning CBD.
McConnel also shared in the release that he is looking forward to working closely with Dr. Hahn on important issues for Kentucky, and that he and Dr. Hahn also discussed Senator McConnel’s legislation to help ensure that dangerous nicotine products, including vaping devices, do not reach children’s hands.
The release further touched upon Senator McConnel’s “Tobacco-Free Youth Act.” According to the release, it is a bipartisan federal bill, and when enacted, it will increase the minimum age to purchase tobacco from age 18 to 21.
