WSLCB Files Petitions to Revise Marijuana Packaging and Labeling Rules

Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board issued a news bulletin at 9:45 am, 26^th Aug 2019 to the stakeholders regarding the revision of marijuana packaging and labeling rules. CR-101 has been filed on 29^th May 2019 to consider two rule making petitions. It also aims at discussing the addition of board interim policies to implement Engrossed Senate Substitute Bill or ESSB 5298.

ESSB 5298 assists the consumers when buying any marijuana products by allowing additional information on the packaging and labeling.

Additional information may include:

• Structure and claim on the Department of Health (DOH) acquiescent products.
• Directions or recommended conditions of use.
• Warning describing the product’s psychoactive effects.

Stakeholders are welcomed for participation and discussion during the rule development process. WSLCB is going to host, listen and learn sessions for the stakeholders in September and October, and invites all valuable feedback on draft conceptual rules, that will be released in mid-September.

The packaging submissions containing information regarding the ESSB 5298 will not be accounted for, while it is in the rule development phase. The effective date of ESSB 5298 is January 2020 and is still in the early process of rule development. The packaging and labeling submission described in ESSB 5298 will start on December 2019, following the rule adoption. It is kindly requested to hold any packaging and labeling submissions related to ESSB 5298, before the predicted rule effective date of January 1, 2020.
