Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture Makes a Push to Legitimize CBD in Florida

Nikki Fried, Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services, warned consumers about the hemp-CBD products that they are introduced to by friends, family, and their local bartender, and indicated that such products may be laden with harmful chemicals and toxins, according to a VICE news report.

She also shared with VICE news that she is “begging” consumers to not purchase CBD products that are on store shelves because “we just don’t know.” She added that the products could have THC, and no CBD, or that it could have chemicals or metals. Without regulations, there is no way of knowing.

It also appears that Fried is going to do something about it. She further stated that Florida has agricultural experts, economics, financial gurus, buyers, sellers, traders, and resilient farmers. As such, the state’s rules are going to be what “they’re going to compare” every other state against.

The state released its proposed rule at the end of last month and has been holding public forums. The proposed rules, which can be viewed here: Proposed Rules. These rules permit the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to authorize and oversee the development of the state’s hemp program, and to regulate the cultivation of hemp in the state. Further, the rules provide for the establishment of an Industrial Hemp Advisory Council.

In addition, Fried is also making plans to ensure that products approved are labeled properly, and that companies currently selling CBD products will receive warning labels, reports VICE News. She further added that if the companies do not comply, then they will receive cease and desist letters.
