According to a recent report by Business Day, Zimbabwe may start export hemp. The country is reportedly struggling with foreign currency earnings and the export may be able to provide the country with the boost it needs.
Monica Mutsvangwa stated that the country is seeking to turn cannabis into a top foreign currency earner. She added,
“The crop can be a good substitute to the leading export crop tobacco, which is currently facing possibilities of being banned internationally due to its adverse effects on health.”
To make the export a possibility, the country will need to reform its cannabis laws, which currently only permit hemp for medicinal and scientific purposes. Mustvangwa stated,
“Currently, Zimbabwe only allows for the cultivation and processing of cannabis specifically for medicinal and scientific purposes. In view of the foregoing, the law governing the use and control of hemp in the country will be repealed to reflect the current industrial thrust of the country.”
