Oklahoma Health Department to Start Food Inspections for CBD and Medical Cannabis Companies

On June 3rd, the Oklahoma State Department of Health has announced that it will start inspecting food products that have CBD and medical marijuana in their ingredients.

Interim OSDH Commissioner Tom Bates states that businesses manufacturing and producing food with CBD or medical marijuana have been given ample time to get a license to ensure that businesses adhere to the law. The aim of this move is to make sure that all companies with CBD or medical marijuana in their food products follow the standard and sanitary practices in producing goods with the mentioned substances.

To add to that, this annual inspection aims to provide consumers assurance that CBD and medical marijuana food products are being handled and processed well. It ensures that companies with a license meet the standard in manufacturing these substances.

However, not all companies were able to get their licenses for a number of reasons. In any case, the Department of Health will still aid companies being inspected in the licensing process. The inspection will include compliance checks on processors and dispensaries. A routine inspection will also be included for all processors in the manufacturing site of the business.

Those who already have a license will be exempted. Companies that do not sell food that has CBD or medical marijuana are not required to get a license as well. On the other hand, companies that are not licensed but produce the following will be audited by the Department of Health:

  • Flavored tinctures or oils found in food
  • Various types of sweets like gum, baked goods, and candies (hard and soft)
  • Infused honey
  • Infused bottled water
  • Packaged food products

Initially, the application fee will cost $425 and the license fee, another $425. Food companies are required to renew their licenses every year. This will cost around $335. To those who need assistance in licensing, local county health departments can be contacted.
