Just recently, the Lake Superior State University (LSSU) announced that they will be partnering with Agilent Technologies to create the LSSU Cannabis Center of Excellence (CoE). According to Dr. Rodney Hanely, the President of LSSU,
“This new strategic partnership is going to focus on the serious intellectual scientific inquiry of cannabis. Our graduates will meet the demand for qualified analytical chemists in both the scientific and cannabis communities.”
The CoE will be a facility of research and education for cannabis chemistry and analysis. Because of the exponential growth of the cannabis industry, both LSSU and Agilent has thought it wise to create a state-of-the-art center for all cannabis-related research.
Moreover, LSSU seeks to focus on training its students to be chemists who are experienced in a wide range of instrumentation and techniques needed and applied in the modern era. With the help of the equipment from Agilent – including an ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and gas chromatography, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometers (ICP-MS), and microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometers (MP-AES) – these students will be immersed with coursework that aims to give a world-class practice. This is coupled with mentoring on research for cannabis-related studies.
Dr. Steve Johnson, Dean of the College of Science and the Environment further adds that
“The LSSU Cannabis Center of Excellence, sponsored by Agilent was created to provide a platform for our students to be at the forefront of the cannabis analytics industry. The instrumentation available is rarely paralleled at other undergraduate institutions. The focus of the cannabis program is to provide our graduates with the analytical skills necessary to move successfully into the cannabis industry.”
Furthermore, Agilent’s Senior Director of Laboratory Solutions Sales Steven Gagliardi, says that
“Agilent is proud to sponsor the LSSU Cannabis Center of Excellence. The strong program that LSSU has developed, combined with Agilent’s innovative instrumentation, is sure to cultivate industry-leading analytical chemists in this fast-growing area of cannabis research.”
