With another year of Fourth of July celebrations underway, a common concern from pet owners is how their dogs are affected by fireworks. When fireworks are on display, on either large or small scale, dogs often shake in terror or hide away barking until they are over. This can cause some owners to not participate in fireworks, but there is still the concern of fireworks going off in the neighborhood. Vets are advising pet owners administer CBD to their pets to help cope with stressful or anxiety-inducing situations, according to a news report.
A vet with the Texas Animal Medical Clinic first began prescribing hemp-CBD oil to her patients 6 months ago. Her first patient was a puppy that suffered from epilepsy as well as severe anxiety. The results were promising (but not conclusive), and the puppy no longer displayed symptoms of anxiety. The puppy was said to be more well-behaved and it even stopped having epileptic seizures. The puppy has continued to use CBD on an ongoing-basis to help maintain these results. For CBD to take effect for seizures, it typically takes 24-48 hours. For treatment of anxiety, it takes a much shorter time and can begin to work after only 30 minutes.
Individuals should be aware that there are no studies showing or supporting CBD's safety or effectiveness for pets.
