Examining Democratic Presidential Candidate Joe Biden and His Medical Marijuana Position

The 2020 presidential election is just around the corner and until then, men and women have the opportunity to determine who the right candidate is for them. One’s preference for a candidate can depend upon a number of factors, including the candidate’s stance on hot-topic issues. One-hot topic issue for many is marijuana, which is illegal under federal law and is classified as a Schedule I substance. Here is an overview of candidate Biden’s stance.

One of the foremost resources that most individuals should gravitate towards is the candidate’s website. Unfortunately, Biden’s website does not take a clear stance on his position on marijuana. Rather, it touches upon the criminal justice system. It states,

“We need to reform the criminal justice system to prioritize prevention, eliminate racial disparities at every stage, get rid of sentencing practices that don’t fit the crime, and help make sure formerly incarcerated individuals who have served their sentences are able to fully participate in our democracy and economy….”

Additionally, Biden has had a history of opposing marijuana legalization. In 1974, as a senator, he stated that he did not believe that marijuana should be legalized, and then maintained his position that it was a gateway drug. In 2010, he stated,

“I still believe it’s a gateway drug. I’ve spent a lot of my life as chairman of the Judiciary Committee dealing with this. I think it would be a mistake to legalize.”

It appears, though, that Biden’s stance may be changing. Biden shared with voters at a house party in Hashua, New Hampshire,

“Nobody should be in jail for smoking marijuana.”
