A Boring Life (Formerly Hip Chick Farms) Goes From Frozen Chicken Brand to CBD Snack Market

Serafina Palandech and Jennifer Johnson, owners of Hip Chick Farms sold their business last year, and transitioned to something entirely different – CBD. A recent article in Nosh details their journey.

After selling their business, they moved to a lavender farm in Boring, Oregon, where they decided to start their CBD business. Their CBD business is focused on products such as CBD-infused nuts and chocolates. Called “A Boring Life,” the business is also a part of a cohort. The cohort is comprised of “seed stage” companies at CanaopyBoulder, a CBD business accelerator.

Even though A Boring Life is a CBD company, it has taken a few pointers from its predecessor, Hip Chick Farms, such as regenerative agricultural practices, sourcing organic, and ethical growth. However, when it comes to the chicken business, Palandech shared a few of the qualities that became struggles. She stated,

“The welfare piece was always challenging in a way I didn’t always anticipate. Organic humanely raised chicken is very difficult to produce.”

At some point, the chicken business began moving in a different direction. The CBD business seemed to comport with the couple’s values, such as chef-curated, sustainable agriculture, quality food, health, and wellness products. Further, the team were looking to get into the CBD business, which has larger margins than poultry. In terms of the business’s growth, Palandech stated,

“With Hip Chicks I wanted it to grow very quickly, and with A Boring Life I want to grow it smartly.”

It took A Boring Life over six months to develop its product line. This timeframe includes offsite quality control tests. As Palandech said,

“Its incredibly exciting, but really difficult because there are no general manufacturing practices in place for farms. We’re doing everything we can to follow the regulations; there’s just no definite regulation.”

Those who are interested in learning more about the brand’s products can do so on the brand’s website. Further, the products are scheduled to launch on Amazon as well. Palandech added,

“I think we have the opportunity to really talk to the average consumer across the country to educate them and be a trusted voice. We’re chef-curated; I think that we have a really good tasting product.”
